Scotts Beach

Around the corner and there it is, the one we've been headed for and the one we don't really want to reach - not for a few more days anyway. Kohaihai Bluff and one last climb and descent and it's over.

Still looks like a good hour or more away

First is Scotts Beach and a walk along the sand to the campground, a sheltered and lawned spot near the far end of the beach, visually delightful but the minute we sit down we might be right back at the Lewis Hut. Sandflies by the million. You'd want a totally enclosed tent to camp here.

There's an interesting fountain, and some toilets which I am grateful for, but I can do without the sandflies so I push on ahead of the girls for a bit.

The track begins to climb again. It's been a long day, and I drop my pace to comfortable and push on up the slope.

There's a bridge here that's so new the wood hasn't had time to weather.

I reach the saddle, and wait for the girls to arrive, and listen to the birds. I grab a drink while they take a sideways detour to the lookout point. (Lookouts - the alleged goal of any decent tramper. I hate the bloody things - make the pit of my stomach change unpleasantly. I like walking in the landscape, not on it.)
